The power of the "LBD"

Updated: Jun 7, 2023

Fashionistas everywhere rely on their favorite LBD—little black dress—to get them through cocktail parties, weddings and funerals in style. Black goes with everything, is simple yet sophisticated, and just feels polished.

In the decorating world, a different type of LBD—little black details—are also crucial to pulling together a room with style. I've heard many designers say there should be some black in every room, and I agree. Even the palest or most boldly colorful rooms can use a punch of black.

Consider this living room, staged by Visual Jill. While the room is quietly neutral, the pops of orange combined with black details make a huge impact. The black stripes on the pillow, the black legs of the Nelson bench, the broad black strokes in the artwork, and the black object on the mantle all serve to keep your eye moving across the room.

In this room, black is used strategically in the light fixture, pillow, artwork, pillows and of course the stunning wallpaper. These black details add crisp definition to the airy light blue.

Even in this cozy, colorful and eclectic room, there is a bit of black bouncing around the space to keep it from being too whimsical.

Look around your rooms . . . are you missing a bit of black? If so, here are some easy ways to inject black into your home.
