I'm a big believer in breaking the rules (when it comes to decorating, anyway). I'd choose a teal sofa over a beige sofa any day—I don't care that "neutrals are more practical." And while many designers give the thumbs down to accent walls, I'm a fan. I truly believe people should decorate according to their own style, creating a home that tells THEIR unique story.
But there are certain practical guidelines that just make sense no matter the style. These measurements will help you create spaces that are comfortable and easy to move around in.
Dining Room
Make sure your dinner guests have enough elbow room, can see each other across the table, and can easily push their chairs in and out.
Living/TV Room
Hang your TV and your artwork so they are easy to enjoy! (Note: many TVs mounted over fireplaces are too high!)
Seating
Before you fall in love with those barstools, make sure they are the right height!
