Color Combo: Burnt Orange and Blue

Updated: Jun 7, 2023

I was lucky enough to take a trip to Tel Aviv last week. The architecture, colors, street art and markets provided plenty of visual inspiration for me. As I strolled the streets taking in the style, this color combination stopped me in my tracks.

What would you call the color on the left? Clay, terracotta, burnt orange, dark peach? It just looks stunning next to the mid-tone blue. It makes sense that this combination works, because blue and orange are complimentary colors—meaning they are opposite on the color wheel. Complimentary colors always look good together.

When I got home from my trip, I found my new Better Homes & Gardens magazine waiting for me--and I laughed when I saw the cover.

Clearly I'm not the only one loving this fresh color combo. In fact, Better Homes & Gardens has declared this peachy coral "Canyon Ridge" as their 2023 Color of the Year. They've paired it here with Colbalt, but I think any blue is a great match.

I've been searching for ways to bring a similar combination into my own home, and here are some options I like.

Left to right: Indian Printed Linen Panel fabric from F&P Interiors; Macrame wall hanging from TheWiseFiberCompany on Etsy; A Fruity Situation Peel-and-Stick Wallpaper from Lime&Lou.

Left to right: Mabelle Table Lamp from Anthropologie; Mid-Century Modern curtains from Society6 by artist nineflorals; reversible Flower Leisure Quilt from OwnKoti.
